The Truth About Protein in Your Diet

There is so much information out there about diet. The "experts" repeat the same thing repeatedly. If you only pay attention to them, you might not discover the few that are saying something different. What happens if you actually read what the "contrarians" have to say about a healthy diet?

Protein Low Carb

Here are some things I've found:

Protein Low Carb

Vegetarian is not the better way to go. First, let me be honest. I'm not a vegetarian. I have family members who are. One niece is raising all three of her children on a vegetarian diet. They seem healthy and happy. One great niece, when she was a teenager, said she rebelled against her parents by going out and eating meat. That sure is healthier than drugs.

Back to a vegetarian diet... in 1940 Dr. Daniel Munro believed humans should have a high protein diet. He based his opinion on the comparison of the digestive tracts of carnivores (meet eaters), such as wolves, herbivores (sheep, cows) to the human digestive system. Turns out our system is like the wolfs not like the cow. The plant eaters have to chew and re-chew their food continually, have a large pouch where they store their cud whereas us humans have a tiny appendix... which ruptures occasionally.

You need more than a few ounces of protein a day. This one has always confused me. I went to a doctor years ago who said I need to eat much more protein. I asked about those who advocated low protein and he wasn't happy with my question. If he had just shown me some research I would have paid more attention. Here's some information you can research:

60-70% of the protein you eat is used up in its own digestion. 30-40% of protein is used for the biochemical processes of the body

What does this mean? Most of the protein is burned off just being digested. The rest is available for supporting the body. The Basic medical Biochemistry - a Clinical Approach says that a 150 pound man needs a full pound of animal protein, not plant protein, for the body to run efficiently. Half of that is immediately used to digest itself. That's a lot of protein.

What protein supports in your body:

Your muscles Your skeletal system Your immune system Your hormones The structure of your cells

According to this data, if we only eat a few ounces of protein a day, we don't have what we need to have a strong, healthy, optimally functioning body. Good to know, isn't it?
